We’ve only just nudged over into 2017 and my husband Marc already has a new nickname for me.
I’m now referred to as ‘2017 Brooke’.
Every time I try and throw something out/put something away/suggest we try something new I’m met with a response like “is this 2017 Brooke asking??”
But don’t worry, it’s totally ok.
2017 Brooke is a whole new Brooke.
If you read my last post for 2016, you’ll know I didn’t have the best of years. I’m not necessarily expecting 2017 to be the ‘best year ever’ like so many blogs/celebrities/online courses want you to aspire to. All I ask is that 2017 is a shit load better than last year!
So, instead of subscribing to a truck load of new year’s resolutions (that I won’t keep anyway), 2017 Brooke is all about new year’s ‘intentions’. My friend Steph from Steph Bartlett gave me the idea over coffee recently….and I love it! My intentions are all about how I want to feel based on the lifestyle I want to lead….as opposed to setting myself up for lots of misery i.e. that old chestnut of ‘I want to lose weight’ et al!
I was just about to put pen to paper for this post when I thought “does anyone care??”. Intentions might be seen as personal, but I’m an open book on most subjects so I’m happy to share (and I hope my readers are interested).
2017 Brooke is also looking for accountability and what better way to stay accountable than to blog about it.
#1 – 2017 Brooke will reduce my family’s food wastage and be more sustainable. As a family of 4, a lot of what we buy gets thrown away due to poor planning. I’m not so concerned about the financial side, but let’s be honest, what a waste! I’m ashamed of the sheer amount of what we throw out. I know we can do improve through better organisation and forward planning.
Action – Fridays will be a meal planning day where I map out our meals for the coming week.
#2 – 2017 Brooke will be brave and try a matcha latte and a turmeric latte. Drinking coffee is part of who I am but I’ve been too chicken to give these ‘woo-woo’ varieties a crack. No more.
Action – Nike (just do it).
#3 – 2017 Brooke will continue to (unapologetically) love drinking coffee and will seek out great coffee whenever I can.
I would love to be part of Adelaide’s ‘Coffee Glitterati’ (if there is such a thing) and be invited to new café openings/VIP nights etc. If anyone out there can hook me up, please let me know 🙂
Action – Nike!
#4 – 2017 Brooke will get fitter and stronger. My 4.5-year-old has become obsessed with asking me about our wedding day so over Xmas I showed her the wedding video. I’m not going to lie – I was married in 2007 so yes, I was a LOT thinner than I am today but that’s not what bothered me as I watched it. I was remembering how fit I used to be.
Like many ‘soon to be brides’ I was at the gym daily in the lead up to the wedding, but I was also playing mixed netball every week as well as doing lots of running on the treadmill. These days I’m out of breath if the lift in my building is down for maintenance.
Action – I’m too old for crazy extreme diets but I want to feel healthy and strong. I’m going to work towards 2 goals:
- Be able to do 100 push-ups non-stop by 31 December (on my knees but feet would be better) and
- Be fit enough to do the 5 day Kangaroo Island Wilderness Walk with Big Heart Adventures later this year
It would be awesome to lose a couple of kg along the way, but it’s not my focus. I weigh 77.2 kg (on the day this blog went live) and we’ll see how much I weigh at 31 December.
#5 – 2017 Brooke will continue to declutter around the home and work toward a slow living lifestyle. I wrote about decluttering in the early part of 2016, but the accumulation of stuff has crept up on me again. I know I feel calmer and more in control when I’m not looking at ‘excess’ in every room so a lot of stuff needs to go.
Action – I have a tendency to get disheartened when I don’t make the progress I expect, so I’m going to go about this intention calmly and sensibly. I’ll focus on a room at a time and if that’s too overwhelming, I’ll scale back to simply decluttering a drawer or a cupboard. I will prevail!
#6 – 2017 Brooke will also do a digital declutter. I was a late adopter to Facebook, but when I look at my feed there is so much crap in there that I don’t give 2 hoots about. Unsubscribing from emails and unfollowing random Instagram accounts is also in the firing line.
Action – Nike! As of today, I have 516 likes on FB and I’d like to smash that by 50%. I’ve already been unfollowing pages on the List & Assist Instagram page (300+ over the xmas break…..yee ha!).
#7 – Finally, 2017 Brooke will stop impulse buying (for business). I’ve stopped impulse buying (mostly) in my personal life but business is another story. In December 2016, I bought access to an online library of ‘must have’ content for bloggers on a whim….and I haven’t even logged in once.
Action – be mindful of ‘shiny new things’ and think carefully before chasing after them. As per above, I often buy/enrol in courses/webinars because other people around me are. I need to seek out these learning opportunities when I’m ready for them. Trying to keep up with the Joneses makes me very miserable.
Thoughts?? After re-reading the above, 2017 Brooke is pretty chuffed with my proposed intentions. I’m a big believer in deadlines and accountability, so I’ll check in on FB periodically and let you know who I’m getting on.
I would love to hear what’s in store for you in 2017, just leave me a comment below.
So, turmeric latte anyone?? 😉
